Why a Strong Password Is No Longer Enough

For years, the advice was simple: use a strong password. It is still good advice, but on its own it is no longer enough to keep a business safe. Passwords get reused, guessed, phished and leaked, and once one is in the wrong hands, a strong password offers no protection at all. This is why multi-factor authentication has become essential rather than optional.

The problem with relying on passwords

A password is a single point of failure. However long or complex you make it, it can still be stolen in a data breach somewhere else, captured by a convincing fake login page, or simply reused across accounts until one of them is compromised. Attackers are not cracking passwords by brute force nearly as often as they are walking in with credentials someone handed over without realising.

Multi-factor authentication closes the gap

Multi-factor authentication adds a second check, usually a prompt on a phone, so a stolen password alone is not enough to get in. It is one of the single most effective security measures a business can put in place, and it blocks the overwhelming majority of account takeover attempts. For the small effort it asks of your team, the protection it adds is hard to beat.

Access controls matter just as much

Authentication is only half the picture. Businesses also need sensible access controls and a clear process for reviewing who can reach what. People accumulate access over time, and accounts that can reach everything make a breach far worse than it needs to be. Reviewing permissions regularly keeps the damage contained if something does go wrong.

Security and simplicity can work together

The goal is to make life harder for attackers without making life harder for your team. Done properly, with the right tools and a little thought, modern security is barely noticeable to staff day to day.
